Keeping pets is common and these days almost every household has one pet or the other. Thus there is an increase in the demand for the various veterinary services where people can easily bring their pets for getting vaccinated at regular intervals and regular checkups. Veterinarians provide health care facilities for the livestock, pets, sporting and also the laboratory animals.

Most of the vets have their own clinics. Many provide services for small animals while there are some of the veterinarians who work with the various large animals that can also include the food animals. Vets ensure that pets are in best of health.

Veterinary jobs require huge amount of responsibility, those associated with this profession must be extremely dedicated and compassionate. Vaccinating, diagnosing, examining and providing treatment to the animals is done by vets. Those pets who are suffering from serious diseases are admitted to the animal hospital or clinic on the basis of the vet's advice. The veterinarians perform operations on the animals for bettering their physical conditions. Not only talking care of the pets, the veterinarians also have the duty of providing adequate knowledge to the pet owners for the ways in which they can undertake proper care for their pet. Veterinarians who treat large animals need to visit farms and ranches. Sometimes they also need to undertake surgeries in farms in difficult and unhygienic conditions.

The job of a veterinarian is very demanding. Not everyone can handle pets very efficiently. A lot of patience, compassion and empathy are required to become a veterinarian. Veterinarians must have a completed a 4-year program from an accredited college along with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M. or V.M.D.) degree. They also need a license to start their practice. There are pre veterinary courses that place emphasis on sciences. Some of the common programs require studying in inorganic and organic chemistry, general biology, biochemistry, animal biology, physics, chemistry, cellular biology, genetics, microbiology, cellular biology among various other subjects. In the past few years, the courses in career development and practice management are also included in the study material. These courses help the person in providing groundwork in wide-ranging business knowledge for the fresh graduates.

Veterinarians dealing with animals are required to spend long working hours, work in shifts, at night and during the weekends. The average salary that is paid to the veterinary college graduates differ largely on the area in which they practice. If the vet deals with the small animals, receives an amount of about $50,878 while those dealing with the large animals are paid $50,403. The veterinarians practicing privately can earn a handsome salary of $49,635.

Job prospects for the veterinarians are on an increase as more and more people are becoming aware of their pets' health. Every one wants to keep their pet healthy and that can be done with the help of veterinarian. The job prospects are expected to rise at the similar pace of the other jobs.
