It is very important to understand that the role of a veterinary assistant is different from that of a veterinarian. The main responsibility of a veterinary assistant is to assist the veterinarian or a veterinary technician.



The regular tasks that a veterinary assistant include:
  • Help in the treatment of animals by holding and handling them.
  • Maintain cleanliness in the clinic and disinfect the cages of animals and the work area.
  • Feed the animals, exercise them, and maintain basic animal care.
  • Make sure that the instruments used and the laboratories are sterilized properly.
  • Take x-rays of animals
  • Prepare and provide appropriate vaccinations to the animals under the supervision of the vets.
  • Maintain records about the animals.
Veterinary employment opportunities can be found at animal hospitals, vet clinics, research labs, animal shelters, zoos, amusement parks, and pet stores. Other such places where veterinary opportunities are found are places where animals are of great importance. Some people may also have private veterinary assistants for their pets.

Educational Requirements/Training

There are no formal educational requirements for a veterinary assistant. They do not have to pass any certification examination nor are they required to have any specific degree. The minimum level of education required is a high school diploma. They receive on the job training. This is where they get their training and experience from. There are many schools and colleges that give special training to veterinary assistants. They have special courses for them. Lots of job opportunities for a veterinary assistant can be found on job search websites. There are many websites that are specialized veterinary recruitment sites and they post only veterinary positions and vacancies. Most of the veterinary jobs are posted as veterinary help wanted. There are also certain recruiters specializing in veterinary recruiting. These recruiters can also be a source of information on where to find those jobs.
