Air Travel
Air travel for pets is not a good option because pets require a cage, and are considered cargo. This means your pet will have a very uncomfortable ride.
Travel by Car
Automobile travel is the best option when travelling with your dog. Your dog is comfortable in a vehicle it has been in before. If your dog has not been in your car before, start now and allow the dog to become comfortable with travelling in the vehicle with you.
Planning for a vacation with your pet dog
It is important to know where the rest areas are in case you need to stop for family members and your dog. Keep in mind to stop every few hours. Rest is required for all travelers, pets as well.
A pet owner must research where the veterinary hospitals are. Make sure the animal hospital is located near your vacation destination.
Make a list of supplies that are needed for your family as well as your pet.
Supplies should include:
- Leash
- Crate or kennel and/or dog seat belt
- Water and a bowl
- Dog food
- Dog bed
- Blanket
- Dog treats
- Toys
- Plastic bags for waste disposal
- Your pet’s medical record
- And medicine if your dog is on medication
Hotels
Most hotels do not allow pets but there are some hotels, which do. They are very pet friendly. Some hotels offer pet beds for their patrons who arrive with their dogs. Ask what activities are available for your dog and what the costs are for additional services required for your pet.
Bed and Breakfast Inns
Most bed and breakfast inns do not accommodate dogs but there are some, which do. There are pet friendly bed and breakfast inns but are difficult to locate in the destination of your choice.
Going camping with your dog
Camping is an activity that can be full of joy for your family, especially with the dog with you. This is not a recommended activity but if you decide to take the dog with you, make sure you check with the campgrounds if they allow pets.
Always be prepared when travelling with your family and pet. Emergencies can happen anywhere, so planning must be done accurately and thoughtfully. Extra time may be required for proper planning but it will be worth it in the long-run. The joy your family and dog share is well worth the extra effort and every extra minute.
Have a nice trip.
